Battery Storage Incentives on Long Island

A plain-English overview of incentives that may apply to home battery storage paired with solar on Long Island, including federal and state-level options.

A planning note before incentives

Battery backup is a planning option, not a guarantee of uninterrupted power. Backup runtime depends on battery size, the circuits connected to the backup loadcenter, and how your licensed local installer configures the system. No installer should promise storm-proofing — a right-sized battery keeps critical loads running through outages within its capacity, but the grid, the weather, and the home itself still impose limits.

Long Island Solar Pros provides solar installation help. We are not a Tesla Certified Installer, not a NYSERDA-designated contractor, and not a PSEG partner. The role of this guide is to help homeowners understand what to ask before signing a battery proposal.

Why battery incentives matter

Battery storage is one of the largest line items on a typical solar-plus-battery proposal. Incentives can move the math significantly — and they change over time, which is why this is one area where the proposal should reflect the current programs rather than year-old web articles.

NYSERDA Long Island solar + storage installation incentive

NYSERDA states that Long Island residents pairing solar and storage can access an installation incentive for the energy storage component. Eligible homeowners may also participate in LIPA's Dynamic Load Management program. Specific incentive amounts and program rules change — the planning review keeps storage savings figures general unless source-backed values are available for the specific home.

How federal incentives have historically treated batteries

Historically, when a battery was installed alongside solar (and met program rules), it was generally treated as part of the qualified solar property for federal Residential Clean Energy Credit purposes. The IRS Residential Clean Energy Credit applied to qualified property installed from 2022 through December 31, 2025 and is not available for property placed in service after that date — the planning review verifies whichever federal program is active at the time of installation. This is general information, not tax advice.

PSEG Long Island Battery Storage Rewards

PSEG Long Island runs a Battery Storage Rewards program that residential and commercial battery storage customers may participate in. The program operates during a May 1 to September 30 window, and participants may receive annual payments through an aggregator. Specific payment terms depend on the aggregator and on system performance.

This is one of the most consequential battery-related programs on Long Island, and it changes from time to time. Ask your installer to confirm current terms and walk through which aggregators are accepting new participants.

Other state and utility programs

New York and PSEG Long Island periodically run additional programs that apply to battery storage paired with residential solar. These programs change. Before signing a battery contract on Long Island, ask your installer to walk through the current programs in writing.

Incentives change and eligibility varies. Confirm details with the program administrator and a qualified tax professional.
